Motherboard troubleshooting requires a strong understanding of fundamental electronics. Without understanding Ohms Law, voltage drops, and diode mode values, board-level diagnosis becomes impossible.
1. Voltage Testing (Hot Testing)
Voltage testing is conducted while the motherboard is powered by a battery or DC regulated power supply. Crucial voltage lines like VPH_PWR, VBAT, and buck converter outputs (0.8V to 1.8V for CPU and RAM cores) must be checked in sequence.
2. Diode Mode Value (Cold Testing)
Cold testing is the foundation of chip-level phone repair. With the board completely unpowered and the red multimeter probe grounded, the black probe measures the forward voltage drop of semiconductor junctions. Comparing measured values against schematic schematics (e.g. Borneo, Pragmafix) identifies open or short lines instantly.
3. Resistance & Thermal Short Detection
When a primary power rail (like VDD_MAIN or VPH_PWR) reads 0 ohms to ground, a shorted filter capacitor or faulty power IC is heating up. Using rosin atomizers or thermal cameras alongside controlled DC voltage injection reveals the defective component in seconds.
