Charging problems are among the most frequent smartphone issues presented to repair centres every day. When a modern 4G or 5G smartphone fails to draw current or displays slow charging warnings, technicians must follow a structured testing methodology rather than guessing.
1. Checking the Charging Port & CC Board
Inspect the USB-C or Lightning receptacle under a microscope. Check for compacted lint, bent pins, or pin oxidation. Connect an inline USB power meter to measure current draw. If voltage is present at 5V but current draw is 0.00A, test the sub-board (CC board) test pads using a digital multimeter in diode mode.
2. Sub-to-Main Interconnect Flex Cable
Drop damage frequently shears or cracks the sub-board interconnect flex cable. Measure continuity and line voltage on the VBUS line from the CC board to the mainboard connector. If line drop occurs, replace the flex ribbon before suspecting motherboard ICs.
3. Over-Voltage Protection (OVP) IC & PMIC
Modern smartphones protect the main power management circuit with an OVP MOSFET or IC. Check whether 5V arrives at the OVP input and whether 5V outputs onto the VBUS line. If the OVP chip is shorted to ground, it blocks charging to protect the main power circuitry. Replace the OVP BGA chip or reball if necessary.
